Linen Tablecloth to Curtains

I love the look of simple white cotton linen curtains and made some inexpensively this week.
For some time now I have wanted white curtains in the family room/kitchen end of our home. With patio doors, a large triple window and one smaller corner window we need 5 panels. That would be a lot of fabric and all the fabrics I found were expensive. {It is getting harder to find fabric stores here.} The solution: I bought 5 linen 100% cotton tablecloths, measuring 70" x 126", on clear out at HomeSense for $13 (Cdn) each. That makes each tablecloth 3.5 yards x 70 inches wide.
They have a fine simple weave and no shininess, exactly what I was looking for! The extra width gives the curtains lots of fullness. I simply cut off the excess length from one end (the other 3 sides are already hemmed), ironed a double fold bottom and sewed a new hem straight line.
I left extra length in case they shrink when I wash them but I like a bit of puddling.
My iron stopped working with 3 panels still wrinkled!  The patio panels are ironed, the family room panels are not. I'm going to borrow my sister's steamer and see if that works faster.
Most recently I had drop cloth drapes in the kitchen and blue paisley in the family room. I like them both but really wanted light, white and all 5 panels the same.
I'm thinking of selling the little antique secretary desk between the door and window. It is a great little piece, especially for a laptop (which we don't have at this time) but I'm hoping to find something taller for that space because of the high ceiling.
I still need to finish slipcovers for the chairs in the family room. I made a slipcover for the brown ottoman, above, using blue and tan outdoor fabric but I'm not liking it. So, hopefully later this week I will be able to finish a new white or cream ottoman slipcover. There is still lots to do, especially with the fireplace/tv wall and the computer desk area, but I'm really liking the way it is all coming together.

I love your white curtains. Tablecloths are a great source for fabric. When I see some on clearance I will pick them up just to reuse the fabric. It really looks pretty with them all the same now.

Thats a real good idea...and they look really pretty! It's amazing the short cuts and wise paths we can find. Mom used to say; "Where theres a will, theres a way!" I believe it :D

Well done on the drapes. They look great - very breezy summery. If the desk between your windows is actually a useful piece but just not high enough, then why don't you put a picture or mirror above it to give it visual height?

Genius on the curtains! Fabric is fabric, so use whatever works. They look great!

You tablecloth curtains turned out fabulous! I LOVE the billowy look of them. I wish I knew how to sew, even a simple hem (I do, but I'm terrible at it ~ lol). Your room is coming along beautifully!
Have a great day,

Elizabeth -

How clever! I love the soft billowy magazine worthy look. I wish I had thought of this before spending...well, let's not go there.
Your last photo makes me swoon. So many things I love ... white slipcovers, hydrangeas, galvanized sap bucket, and hints of the ocean. Question: Did you paint your oar? How did you hang it?

Beatufiul! I totally love white curtains. They do indeed look airy and light. Your high ceilings are decadent! You must love the feeling of added space to your rooms.

Lovin' this no sew solution!

Yay! What a wonderful solution, let's hope tableclothes don't get harder to find in your area. They look beautiful, flow-y and summery. Nice job, Elizabeth (I wouldn't get rid of the secretary, it looks perfect in that spot. I'd find some interesting "art" to hang over it.) Thanks so much for linking to FFT (I think I resized the button so it's smaller, now, oy.) I hope you're having a lovely summer.

Elizabeth I really liked this idea so much that I decided to give it a try in my daughters room. We changed the decor a few months ago but never could decide on what color for the curtains. So after reading your post I spraypainted a rod that was already in my daughters room. Then we went out and bought the rings with the hooks and two tablecloths on clearance for $10 each at Wal Mart. Tomorrow Hubby will put it up and I'll post some pics. Thanks for sharing this thrifty idea.
